You my Masters now?

No other sporting event is enhanced as much by HD as the Masters. The picture is so clear, it's really like looking through the window for 5 hours on Sunday, the cameras usually only a few feet away from the golfers, and the action is mostly commercial free. This year's Masters was mildly exciting with completely unknown Zach Johnson holding off maybe the two best golfers in the world in Tiger Woods and Retief Goosen to win his second career tournament.

Somewhat surprisingly, Tiger has never won a major when he hasn't been leading going into Sunday. But Tiger had a lead at one point yesterday and failed to hang on, appearing mortal for a change. It's not like he choked away a big lead or a late lead, but how great would that have been to watch? He had a chance to go birdie-birdie on 17 and 18, or drop a second shot on 18 for eagle to tie, and that would have been amazing, but we've all seen Tiger hit amazing shots to win tournaments. No one has seen Tiger choke spectacularly. Last years U.S. Open was absolutely riveting, with Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie bogeying 18 when all they needed were pars.

In baseball when Arod comes up small with the game on the line or Lebron clanks one with triple zeros showing you can praise the pitchnig/defense, but there is nothing in sports that can compare to a Sunday meltdown on the links. When Vanderjagt misses a game winner spectacularly, his team can go for the TD in OT. When Shaq starts bricking free throws, his team can stop giving him the ball down the stretch, but when Greg Norman goes from sand trap to sand trap, there's nowhere to hide. When Van De Velde rolled up his pant legs and stepped into Barry Burn, his coach couldn't go to the bench. But Tiger being Tiger is what makes the needle move. I'll take the collapse all week and twice on Sunday.
